INFORMA's DBK Sectoral Observatory recently published these insights in the 'Medical Supplies' Sectoral Report.
Madrid, 22 October 2026.- According to INFORMA's (Cesce's subsidiary) DBK Sectoral Observatory—a leading provider of business, financial, sectoral, and marketing information in Spain and Portugal—the medical supplies market reached €2.05 billion in 2025, representing a 3% increase from the previous year. The sector's revenue thus maintained its upward trend in 2024-2025, supported by strong demand.
By product type, disposable medical supplies was the largest segment, with 75% of total sales value. A long way behind came non-disposable medical-surgical instruments, with a 19% share, while non-electronic diagnostic devices accounted for the remaining 6%.
Export activity accelerated in the last year, so that after growing 9% in 2024, it rose 15.9% in 2025, to €1.14 billion. The European Union was the destination for 68% of foreign sales, led by Portugal, which accounted for nearly 20% of the total.
Meanwhile, imports grew 6.4% in 2025, to €2.994 billion. A total of 54.3% of overseas purchases came from the European Union and 17.4% from the United States.
About 160 companies operate in Spain with significant activity in the manufacturing and/or import of medical supplies, generating employment for about 7,800 workers. The integration of some operators into larger groups and the cessation of activity by small companies, in a context of intense rivalry, drove a moderate decline in the number of companies. Nearly 70% of companies have workforces of fewer than 50 employees, while twenty companies have over 100 workers, eight of them with more than 500.
Supply is characterised by a strong presence of importing subsidiaries of major international groups, mainly US, coexisting with smaller domestic-capital manufacturers. Thus, nine of the top ten companies by sales in the domestic market are foreign-owned. The size of these subsidiaries drives significant business concentration, which is increasing as a result of acquisitions and the integration of companies into the leading groups. In 2025, the top five operators held a combined market share near 39%; the top ten, close to 60%.
