Private banking assets under management exceeded €1 trillion in 2025, after rising 17%
-
Private banking institutions ended 2025 with assets under management of €1.025 trillion, up 17% year-over-year. Forecasts point to continued slowing in growth, amid intensifying competition and less dynamic markets.
-
Universal banks accounted for 74% of business, with institutions specialising in private banking services making up the remaining 26%.
-
Institutions are stepping up strategies aimed at attracting and retaining clients from the early stages of wealth accumulation, giving the affluent segment (upper-middle wealth with growth potential) increasing relevance.

INFORMA's DBK Sectoral Observatory recently published these insights in the Competitors 'Private Banking'.
Madrid, 18 June 2026.- According to INFORMA's (Cesce's subsidiary) DBK Sectoral Observatory—a leading provider of business, financial, sectoral, and marketing information in Spain and Portugal—private banking activity reached €1.025 trillion in assets under management at the end of 2025, representing growth of 16.9% year-over-year, compared with 14.0% in 2024.
Favourable financial market performance, the attraction of new funds and rising demand for wealth advisory and management services were the main drivers of this business over recent years. The number of private banking clients was estimated at around 930,000 at the latest date.
At the end of 2025, universal banks accounted for 74.5% of the total, with specialised institutions making up the remaining 25.5%.
Greater uncertainty in international markets and the already high volume of assets under management will lead, in the short to medium term, to a slowdown in business growth compared with previous fiscal years.
Institutions are intensifying the attraction and retention of affluent clients from the early stages, with upper-middle wealth and growth potential, supported by digital platforms, hybrid models and more segmented investment propositions.
The consolidation process continues among independent and specialised institutions, reflected in corporate transactions aimed at scaling up and strengthening competitive positioning. Meanwhile, large international institutions are showing growing interest in competing in Spain's private banking market.
In addition, assets under management in personal banking services were estimated at around €687.3 billion at the end of 2025, up nearly 10% from 2024. Specialised divisions within universal banks accounted for most of the total.
