  • Sales of pet food products continue to post positive performance in the Spanish market, driven by the rising number of pets in households and higher spending on their care. As a result, the market already neared €1.8 billion in 2025, up 6.5% from 2024 and almost double the level in 2015.

  • The sector shows a high degree of concentration. The top five companies jointly accounted for 54% of business in 2025; the top ten, 70%.

  • INFORMA's DBK Sectoral Observatory recently published these insights in the 'Pet Food' Sectoral Report.

Madrid, 1 October 2026.- According to INFORMA's (Cesce's subsidiary) DBK Sectoral Observatory—a leading provider of business, financial, sectoral, and marketing information in Spain and Portugal—pet food sales value maintained the positive trend of recent years in 2025, underpinned by strong demand driven by the rising number of pets in households and by the growing penetration of high value-added, higher-priced products.

Thus, sales in the domestic market stood at €1.79 billion that year, representing an increase of 6.5%, following the 5.0% rise recorded in 2024.

The cat food segment once again showed the strongest momentum. Nevertheless, the dog segment remained the largest, with a 51% share of total domestic market value, while cat food held 44%. The remaining 5% corresponded to food for other pets.

Exports reached €795 million in 2025, up 9.4% year-on-year. Meanwhile, imports rose 9.2%, to €711 million. Portugal and France were the main export destinations, accounting for 22% and 18% of total exports, respectively. Meanwhile, France stood out as the main country of origin, with a 31% share of total imports.

The sector comprised around 50 pet food manufacturers, which employed about 2,500 people. Alongside them, another set of companies distributed products imported or purchased from other firms.

Most companies are small, with around 60% of the total employing fewer than 50 people, while another 20% have a workforce of between 50 and 100.

The sector shows a high degree of activity concentration among the leading operators, which have a significant presence across Spain and account for a large share of sector sales. The top five operators jointly accounted for 54% of market value in 2025, a figure that reached 70% when considering the top ten.
